Our employment practice, being quite “territorial” in nature, is also very strongly represented in in our Monza & Brianza office and in our Genoa Office, where Giuliano Pennisi, the partner responsible for our work in the city and in Liguria in general is himself Professor of Employment Law in the local University.
Comments of Independent Sources and Additional Details
Labour law was mentioned by the 1999 edition of European Counsel 3000 (published by L&C Publishing Ltd) as one of SLS’s “strong areas of practice”, as it already was in 1998, and Luisa Zambon is personally recommended as a “prominent practitioner” with regard to employment and human resources. Global Counsel 3000, the new annual practice survey of the same publisher, listed again “employment” and “pensions” among our strong areas of practice and recommends in the section “People” of its 2000 edition SLS and, as the head of its employment department, Luisa Zambon; and it recommends us again in 2002 for “Labour”, as it does in 2002-2003 for “Employment and Employee Benefits”. Dr. Zambon and Prof. Pennisi are also listed (the former with a brief biography) in the “Employment” section of European Legal Experts, for the Italian jurisdiction.
Studio Legale Sutti was one of the only three law firms mentioned by ILFR’s 1000 – The Guide to the World’s Leading International Business Law Firms 1999 (published by Euromoney, now also on the Web) as the leading employment law practices in the Italian jurisdiction; and in 2002 our office in Sofia has been recommended by The European Legal 500 for it local labour expertise.
Similarly, in 2002 we have been included in the “leading labour law firms” in Italy, by Global Labour Law, and according to the results of the analysis of the Italian legal market following recommendations by London lawyers – which is available online on the World Legal Forum – A Guide to Law Firms around the Globe, and was published by the issue of June 1999 of the British magazine InBrief – “Studio Legale Sutti… has a strong [employment] practice”.
In fact, as it is the case for other SLS departments, our members are deeply involved in academic, research and conference activities. Luisa Zambon, for instance, has often participated in seminars and conferences such as that organised by CEGOS on 27 and 28 November 1996 in Milan, on “Redundancy or….? Flexible Salaries as a Legal Alternative to a Reduction in the Workforce”, or that held by API-Milano – Associazione Piccole Imprese di Milano and SLS, in Abbiategrasso, care of our office on site, on the 8th of March 2000, where she lectured along with the Firm’s Managing Partner, Stefano Sutti, and Cesare Bulgheroni, on “How to Limit Director’s and Entrepreneurs’ Personal and Criminal Liability through the Appointment of Duly Empowered Executives”. discussing in particular the employment law issues involved.
Davide Valsecchi, head of our Brianza office, has been instead appointed in 2004 to teach employment law to trainee lawyers by the Bar School of the Bar of Monza.
Again, Luisa Zambon was invited, on 27-28 September 2000, to speak on “Legal and Tax Aspects of Insurance Benefits for Employees” in the seminar Coperture assicurative aziendali, organised by IIR, while CEGOS has invited SLS to discuss “Privacy, Treatment of Personal Data and Employer’s Liability: Forbidden or Obligatory Snooping?” in the conference on The Electronic Control of Employees on 23/03/2001 in Milan. The subject of corporate e-mail and Internet use policy and the related employer’s liability, was again discussed in a seminar organised by Associazione Industriale Bresciana on 03/05/2001 (see Brescia Oggi 08/05/2001 “Un incontro in Aib per fare il punto su un tema importante e controverso”), and of another conference by CEGOS, on 05/07/2001, chaired by SLS’s Managing Partner, Stefano Sutti.
Lastly, in the framework of our close cooperation with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Italy, on 3 October 2001 and in in the conference hall of our Head Office in Milan, Masako Nishina of our Tokyo office had the pleasure of introducing the Japanese companies active in Italy to The Basics of Italian Employment, Labour and Immigration Law for Japanese Businesses.
In turn, our London office was deeply involved in the recent acquisition of the Italian pioneering company in the field of Outplacement and Career Counselling by a leading multinational player of the HR business, listed at the London Stock Exchange, and aiming at obtaining an early market positioning with respect to the great opportunities which the radical reforms of Italian labour law and market under way are currently offering (the deal has been discussed by, inter alia, Il Mondo 25/08/2003, “Outplacement, Eris passa a Fairplace”; The Lawyer 18/08/2003, “Plum English Client for Sutti”).
Another “frontier” employment law issue where we have had the opportunity to advise the first Italian operators is temporary work and personnel leasing.
Similarly, in the framework of LegIT, our Labour Law Dept. participated as soon as 1994 in the EC Commission project “T1002 ATTICA – Analysis of Constraints to Transborder Telework in the European Community and the EEA”, which is also available here.
Corporate immigration issues pertaining to the Italian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Romanian jurisdictions are also routinely dealt with by all SLS offices, often in the framework of international M&A transactions.
Some specialisations of SLS’s Labour Law & Related Matters Dept. are discussed in detail in our entries in the relevant Mondaq’s directories (a free registration is needed to access them), and in particular: Employment Law.
